McVeigh One-name Study

My McVeigh one name study Website is up and running. Here is the link: McVeigh One-Name Study . My goal is to trace as many McVeigh (McVay, McVey, and other variants) lines as I can for those born before 1900. I have added 3 McVeigh trees with data which I had previously collected: James Lawrence McVeigh Family, Hugh McVay Family, and Timothy McVeigh Family. I have also started one large one-name study tree, which includes the McVeigh lines from those previous trees and new research.

My first goal was to track the McVeighs on the Isle of Man. I have added those on the Manx Censuses (1841-1911) to the new McVeigh tree. While tracking them, I also found some other (mainly parish) records, which I have also included. Most of the Manx McVeighs came from Ireland and many of those were from County Down. Tracing County Down McVeighs  will probably be my next goal, although the surviving censuses for County Down are only 1901 and 1911.

I have included a map of all the McVeighs in the United Kingdom on the 1881 Census. This was created using Surname Atlas , which is a really cool software program that will map any surname that occurs in the 1881 Census.

Wyatt Paul's name is probably not Dight Paul (c 1810-c. 1870)

I don’t believe Ezekiel ("Zeke"), Nancy and John Paul’s father was named Dight Paul, although that error is perpetrated all over the net. That was the name ONLY on the 1850 Census where he appeared with Zeke, Nancy and John:

CENSUS YR:  1850  STATE or TERRITORY:  NC  COUNTY:  Robeson  DIVISION:  UPPER  REEL NO:  M432-642  PAGE NO:  320b
42  114  114 PAUL           DIGHT          40   M    M    FARMER         500       NC
CENSUS YR:  1850  STATE or TERRITORY:  NC  COUNTY:  Robeson  DIVISION:  UPPER  REEL NO:  M432-642  PAGE NO:  321a
1   114  114 PAUL           NANCY          39   F    M                             SC
2   114  114 PAUL           JANE           14   F    M                             SC
3   114  114 PAUL           MARY           12   F    M                             SC
4   114  114 PAUL           CATHARINE      10   F    M                             SC
5   114  114 PAUL           NANCY          9    F    M                             NC
6   114  114 PAUL           GEORGE         6    M    M                             NC
7   114  114 PAUL           JOHN           3    M    M                             NC
8   114  114 PAUL           EZIEKIEL       3/12 M    M                             NC
9   114  114 PAUL           WILLIAM        12   M    M                             SC

On Waytt Paul's daughter Nancy Paul English’s DC he is listed as Wyatt Paul, b. SC--which is a primary document that should be a bit more reliable than the Census. Her mother was listed as Nancy Miles [Myles], b. SC. Informant was W E English, her grandson.

On Wyatt Paul's son Ezekiel Paul’s DC his father is listed as Wyatt Paul, b. Robeson Co., NC. Informant was Colon Paul, his son. In addition, Zeke’s name is Ezekiel Wyatt Paul. That seems to indicate he might have been named for his father.

On Nancy Sports Paul’s chart she lists him as Wyatt Paul. This chart is not reliable, since it has been altered several times and there are several versions, but all versions list him as Wyatt Paul and he was her father-in-law, father of her husband John Paul.

On the 1840 Census he is Wyatt Paul:
1840 United States Federal Census
Name: Wyatt Paul
Township: Rockingham District
County: Richmond
State: North Carolina

On the 1860 Census he is Wyatt Paul:
Name:Wyatt Paul
[Dight Paul]
Age in 1860:51
Birth Year:abt 1809
Birthplace:South Carolina
The Dight Paul on Ancestry's Index  was added by an Ancestry subscriber as an alternate name. The Census clearly says Wyatt.

The 1870 Census also clearly says Wyatt Paul:
Name:Wyatt Paul
Age in 1870:61
Birth Year:abt 1809
Birthplace:South Carolina

With 5 documents (plus son’s name on tombstone) saying Wyatt Paul and only one Census saying the name Dight Paul, I am not sure why DIGHT is the one everyone seems to like best. I think this is a mistake being repeated over and over which should be corrected.

HABECKER

I often get off on tangents. Someone in the family I am researchers marries into the family or shows up on a census or document and I want to know who they are. In some areas there is so much intermarrying of families, that the research often pays off in finding out more about the family. Other times it doesn't seem to. the HABECKERS are probably examples of the latter, but you never know what distant cousin has a wonderful document, picture, or artifact.

Ida HABECKER  married Frank F RUSMISEL, son of Samuel D, son of David R, son of Christain, son of Adam, son of Georg. Ida's mother, Emma HABECKER, showed up living with the family on the 1930 Census. Ida listed her father as born in Germany. Emma lists her parents as born in Germany. I wanted to find out her father's name. (I usually try to find out the parents of spouses and proof of maiden names.)

The 1900 Census says that August emigrated in 1872 and has been in the US for 28 years, so he arrived when he was 14 years old.

On the 1880 Census August is living as a Boarder with the Warlitz family. The head of the household, Otto, is a Saloon Keeper, so this is probably where August works. The family is from Prussia, so they would also speak German. This time August lists his birthplace (and that of his parents) as Baden , which was at that time a Grand Duchy in the German Federation.

By 1910 August had died and Emma is listed as a widow and head of the household. An unsourced tree on Ancestry gives her maiden name as NAFFZIGER, but no proofs. I've decided not to research this line at this time.

Michael V Propes

The father of David M PROPES (who married Rebecca Virginia RUSMISEL) was Michael V PROPES. Apparently Michael was orphaned at a very young age. "RockinSteve1" has a "Propes Family Tree" on Ancestry. He writes that Martin was apprenticed at a young age:

16 Jun 1807, Shenandoah, Page, VA, Court records show overseers of poor were ordered to bind Martin Propts (aged 6 yrs. 2nd. of October next) to Christian Kite to learn the trade of a cooper (Barrel/Cask Maker, a go-between for the brewery and the innkeeper.

This gives us a birthday of 2 Oct 1801. Then, according to RockinSteve1,  Martin was adopted by Martin STRICKLER:

18 Apr 1810, Adoption Rockingham Co, VA, Martin Strickler becomes guardian, orphan of Elizabeth Propts; William Short was bondsman

This gives us Martin's mother's name.

There is a "St. Paul Member Record" on the Propes Family Tree. It does not say a city, county, or state, so I don't know where this record is located.  [Why don't people cite their sources?] It says:

PROPES, PROBST, PROPST, ETC.

Benjamin b. 1816, rec'd or CF--29 Dec 1832, Parents or other relatives--s/Michael and Mary Elizabeth (Foltz) Propst, Inst. as Elder 28 July 1858, JPC,  m. Eve Louderback, Record of 19 Communions 1833-1858

I imagine there are more records, since this is just the beginning of the alphabet. It would be nice to know where this church is located. I am not sure what it all means. Were there two sons named David? Was Martin's name also Michael?

Rebecca Virginia RUSMISEL and David M PROPES and their descendants

Last week, before I started blogging, I was in the middle of tracing some of my RUSMISEL kinfolks. I have spent the last few days trying to learn a bit about the blogging world. Now it is time for me to get back to my genealogy research.

When I joined Geneabloggers I plugged RUSMISEL into their search engine and had a hit on Michael Hait's "Trick of the Tree" blog. On March 29 he had a post about one of his brick walls: George L OBAUGH. George's son, James A. OBAUGH, married Mary Jane PROPS. Mary Jane was the daughter of  David PROPS and Rebecca Virginia RUSMISEL. In honor of my first blog finding, I am adding the OBAUGHs and Rebecca Virginia's lines to my tree.

Rebecca Virginia RUSMISEL and David PROPS were married in November 1848. Some records show Nov. 30 and some the 23rd. The 23rd is probably the bond, but I have not tried to acquire the original records.

I don't have a death date for David PROPES. I have a death date of 27 Jun 1913 for Miriam. After David's death, she married a Dave KENNEDY.
