Obituary for William Jonathan "Jon" Looney

William Jonathan “Jon” Looney, age 61 of Cornelia, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018.

Born in Demorest, Georgia on September 6, 1957, he was a son of Minnie Ivie Looney of Cornelia and the late William Jarrell Looney. Mr. Looney was a self-employed architect and the co-owner and operator of Precision Detailing. He graduated from Habersham Central in 1975 and went on to Southern Tech from which he graduated in 1980 with an Architectural Engineering degree. A devoted family man, he was an avid University of Georgia fan who enjoyed riding motorcycles and working on home projects. Mr. Looney was a member of Cornelia United Methodist Church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Herron.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Betsy Higgins Looney of Cornelia; daughter and son-in-law, Katie & Jourdan Smith of Gillsville; brother and sister-in-law, Stephen Looney & Teresa McVeigh of Augusta; nieces, Laura Beth Herron and Ginni East; nephews, Paul Herron and Rev. Jake Herron.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 pm, Saturday, December 15, 2018 in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin and Stewart with Rev. Johnny Ray officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 pm until the service hour on Saturday at the funeral home.

Written by her daughter Luna Ivie Long as told by Dora Icie Warwick Ivie 26 April 1961 at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, GA when Dora a patient for duodenal cancer

Mrs. Dora Icie Warwick Ivie b. Jan. 10, 1890 in White Co. about 5 miles from Cleveland. Name after Nora Robinson who stayed with her mother Mary Hannah Potts Warwick during this birth. Dr. (Uncle) Dick Jarrett delivered, who lived near Mossy Creek Church.

Mother had a baby who died of whooping cough. Also was given a baby of Aunt Jane Warwick (sister-in-law). Aunt Jane died when the baby was about 3 weeks old, so her baby was given to Hannah Warwick. So both babies were about the same age and boys. Both caught the whooping cough and died.

When Aunt Bertie was born, Dora and Mamie went to spend the night with Uncle John Nix. When Bernice was born, Dora, Bertie and the other children went down in the "bottoms" to plant corn. John Wesley Warwick (husband) when to Cleveland--he rode a horse about 5 miles--to get a doctor. When they returned, Baby Bernice was already born. Aunt Calley, sister of John Wesley, was holding the baby.

Dora went first to Chattahoochee School until it burned. Then to Macedonia Church while the school was being built. First teacher was David Autry. He had real long hair. The children would pull his hair and jump out the window. He would jump out after them. He was fired--could not keep order. Next teacher was a woman named Leila Brownlow. Schoolhouse was rebuilt. At first it was one room with a big stove. Grades 1 through 7. Mother went through 7th. Sister Mamie went to school one year in Cornelia High School--rented a room from Mr. Sellers to live in.

The house was on about 75 acres and had 8 rooms. The living room was wallpapered. Had 4 head horses. Went to Gainesville one time, paid $500 for 2 work mules. Kept 1 buggy horse, 4 or 5 cows, a few sheep, raised pigs and hogs, chickens, geese and ducks.

Belonged to Zion Methodist church--went every Sunday. Carried dinner and spread tablecloths on ground to Quarterly meetings. Dora would recite poetry or special talks at Sunday School programs. (Dora went with Lester Irvin--or rather he walked home from church with her--her first boyfriend.) Preachers were always coming to the house. Daddy (John Wesley) was a Stewart in the church. Preachers came mostly for Sunday dinner. Have all day singings on Sunday. Always had Saturday meetings once a month at Church. Mother (Hannah) would go on Saturday as she stayed home with John W. Warwick's mother, Mary Ann, on Sunday. She lived with them for 13 years. John W. Warwick's mother and daddy lived in a log house, a big house and backroom through porch to kitchen. Kept milk and butter in the springhouse. Asbury and Mary Ann were moved in because their house was cold and they were getting old. Mary Ann was about 77 and lived to be 90. Asbury lived there about 5 years, then died of pneumonia.

John Wesley would go to Habersham to the Mills to get cloth. Hannah did weave cloth, bedspread. Knitted all stockings (up above knee), dye white stockings with green walnut hulls. Hannah made a suit for father-in-law Asbury Warwick.

Hannah's Mother and Daddy--Melinda (would sit in the corner and smoke a pipe made of clay) and Posey Potts lived at Mossy Creek. Several of their boys lived in Texas so they sold out and moved to Mart, Texas. Hannah's sister Ellie Potts married Jim Hamp Ivie.

Met W. D. Ivie in 1913. W.D. Ivie had gone to work for Floyd Kenimer. John Kenimer brought W.D. to house meet. Met him one Sunday morning--he was wearing a red tie and straw hat.  Walked to Macedonia Church with him and John K. Married 1 year later--Feb. 1, 1914, first day and first Sunday in Feb. Married by Preacher Patterson in home. Made an altar of honeysuckle. Went to church at Zion after a 10:00 wedding. Back home for dinner. Went to W. D. Ivie's home for supper and night.

Brother Wylie and brother Charlie had supper there too but returned home. The third day Dora and Dallas got a two horse wagon to come to Cornelia to buy a bedroom suit, wood range (stove), rocking chair. Also rode in first car that day--belonged to Ed Barr. Next day to Dora's home to get a bed, can stuff, lard, flour. Her daddy gave her $5 and a cow.

Moved to Cornelia--Hill's Mill Road--and lived there 5 years. Then to Cornelia 1 year--Henry was born. Back to Hill's Mill Road on the hill and lived there 5 years. House burned down. Dora and W.D. went to Florida--Vera Beach. W.D. went ahead and Dora came on the train with Henry (6 years) and Luna (18 months). Came back to Cornelia in March--moved to Galloway St.

2. Are you acquainted with the applicant, Mrs. Eliza C. Ivie? If so, how long have you known her?

3. Where does she reside, and how long and since when has she been a resident of this state?

4. Where and when was she born? I don’t know except what she says
5. Were you ever acquainted with her husband? I knew him fifty years
6. Where did he reside in 1861? Habersham County
7. When and to Whom was he married? December 1859 to Eliza C. Taylor
8. When and where was he born? Don’t know of my own knowledge
9. How long have you known him? Fifty years
10. Where and when did W.W. Ivie enlist in the war between the States, and in what Company and Regiment did he enlist,
and how do you know this? 
In 1862 in Smith’s Legion in Clarkesville served in this Legion until discharged August 1863. Re-enlisted in July 1864 in
Co. H 11 Ga. Cavalry. Because I was with him. 
11. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was
12. How long did he perform regular military duty? Up to the surrender
13. When and where was his Company and Regiment surrendered and discharged from service? 
At Statesboro S.C. April 1865
14. Were you with the command when it surrendered? I was not on detail service
15. Was the husband of the applicant present?
He was with command up to about 60 days before the surrender to my knowledge. I left about that time on detail. Have understood he was. 
17. Where and when did he leave command? At surrender so I have understood. As I have answered he was with the command up to 60 
days prior to the surrender when I left on detail and have always understood he was at the surrender
How do you know all this? All my own knowledge by being with him in service
18. Where and when did W. W. Ivie die? Cornelia Ga. 21st Dec. 1900
19. Where did he reside at his death at his death and how long had he been a resident of Georgia?
Cornelia Ga. All his life.

He first enlisted in Smith Legion in May ’62 and then he enlisted in July 1864 at Clarksville Company H, 11th Ga. Calvary

6. How long did your husband serve in said Company and Regiment? about 9 months years

7. When and where did your husband’s Company and Regiment surrender and was discharged? In April 1865 in Statesborough, SC

8. Was you husband present at the time and place where his Company and Regiment surrendered? Yes

10. When and Where did your husband die? 21st day of December 1900

I tried to do a little housework. Did not receive anything.

These are pages that are purported to be from the Burrell Ivie (1813-1868) Bible. The people listed are him, his parents, his children and their spouses. In his book Ivie Family History, Thomas M. Tillotso states that Burrell Family bible was inherited by his son Thomas Jusdon Ivie, who then left it to his son Henry Paige Ivie. I do not know who now owns the original Bible. This scan was found on Ancestry.com on the tree Ivie/Gibbs.

Departed this life in Habersham county, Ga., on the 15th June, 1846, Nathan Pitchford, a native of  Virginia, aged 75 years, 3 months, 13 days. The deceased when a young man emigrated to Georgia, and in the year 1779 married Miss Alsey Gober of Franklin County, Ga....He was permitted to live to see some forty-three grandchildren. (S.H.D.)

[Note: Mossy Creek is now in White County, but was in Habersham when he died. Nathan and Alsey were married in South Carolina. At that time, 3 currently SC counties were part of Franklin County, GA.]

Obituary of Elizabeth PAYNE WARWICK (1763-8143)

Mrs. Elizabeth Warwick, wife of the Rev. Wiley Warwick of the Ga. Conference, departed this life on the 24th of November, 1843, in Habersham Co., Ga., and in the 81st year of her age. She was the daughter of William and Jane Payne, and was born in Charles Co., Maryland. Her parents died when she was very young, and she was brought up by her grandmother. At the age of 17 years she came with her brother Jacob Payne to Brunswick Co., Va. In the year 1787, under the ministry of Rev. John Easter, joined the M.E. Church at Benjamin Johnson's Meeting House, where she remained until the year 1791 when she married her present bereaved husband.... (Josiah Askew)
