Herman Waldermar BORGKVIST

Herman M BORGKVIST was my friend Ben's step-grandfather. He married Ben's grandmother Sybel DAVENPORT. They lived on a farm outside Kittery, Maine. Ben says Herman "taught him the way of the world with the toe of his boot." Herman didn't talk much, but he was a strict discipinarian. Herman was good at making things and had his own blacksmith shop as a hobby. He made bells in different sizes which he would tune with a tuning fork, boat propellers, and custom engraved swords for West Point graduates. He handmade Ben a pair of wooded skis.

According to his passport application in 1920, Herman was born 7 Jan 1892 in Malmo, Skane, Sweden, the son of N H BORGKVIST of Sweden. He immigrated to the US in 1910, coming on a ship from Rosario, Argentina. Ben says he was a Merchant Marine. Soon after he arrived he must have met a woman from Canada because the 1930 Census says he was first married in 1910. His son Joseph BORGKVIST was born in Boston, MA 27 Apr 1911 and his daughter Eva BORGKVIST was born 21 Feb 1917 in Boston, MA.

On 2 Oct 1913 Herman applied for naturalization in the Western District of New York.

Then he enlisted in the Marine Corps. According to US Marine Corps Muster Rolls, Herman enlisted as a private on 20 Oct 1913 in Buffalo, NY and was transferred to Norfolk, VA. He was assigned to serve on the USS New Jersey. On 23 Mar 1915 he qualified as Sharpshooter and won a $3.00 prize on the 31st. By April 1917 he was transferred to Port Royal, Beauford County, SC where he worked as "mechanic in charge of the laundry." By Aug 1917 he had been promoted to  Sergeant at the Naval Prison, Navy Yard, Portsmouth, NH.

Herman must have left the Marine Corps in 1917 because the next record I find for him is his World War I Draft Card 31 Dec 1917 where he says he has a wife and 2 children and served 4 years in the Marine Corps. He is described as medium tall, stout, brown eyes, brown hair, not bald, and no disabilites.

On 14 Mar 1918 in Portland Maine at the US District court, Herman became a naturalized citizen of the USA.

By the 1920 Census on Jan 16 Herman's first wife had died and he was listed as widowed with his two children. He was working as a "Clipper Caulker" at the Navy Yard in Kittery, ME.

Sybel DAVENPORT ROARK BORGKVIST Genealogy

My friend Ben asked me to help him with his genealogy. His grandmother, Sybel, was "the most remarkable woman." She was the first Passamaquoddy Indian to finish college. Ben said that Teddy Roosevelt had an initiative to educate the Indians. Sybel took advantage of it, went to college, and became a school teacher in Barre, Vermont. Ben said the school house was heated by a coal stove and one time Sybel had to chase a bear out with a broom. When Ben knew her she was retired and never left the farm, but she would know everything that was going on by telephone. She would go out in the fields and collect herbs, weeds, and barks to make teas--clover, birch bark, and sumac root. She would bake "green chocolate cakes" from honey and roots. She would make sumac root porridge. In the winter she would find ants frozen under the bark in the maple trees and "eat them like candy." There is a book somewhere written about her named "Sybel", but Ben has been unable to find it, so I'm helping him with the research. I set up a tree on Ancestry named Sybel's Family Tree and started searching.

This is an interesting and challenging bit of research. Ben did not know his grandmother's maiden name and had a number of things incorrect. Her maiden name turned out to be DAVENPORT. He knew the name, but he thought that had been a first husband's name before his grandfather. Ben's grandfather was not talked about in the family and they were forbidden to ask about him. By the time Ben came along Sybel was married to Herman BORGKVIST, a Swede (Ben thought he was Norwegian and did not know how to spell the name).

Ben gave me Sybel's children's names, but got some wrong. At first I thought some of them were named Davenport, but they turned out to be ROARK and BORGKVIST. So far the BORGKVISTs have been the easiest to find.

I have been working on this a couple of weeks now. I think this is the first record I found, Herman in the SSDI:

Gary TAYLOR's Baby

I was contacted by a lady named Mary who is the church historian for Evergreen Baptist Church in Effingham, Florence County, SC. She wrote:

I am working on our cemetary records and I ran across two rows of lots that were purchased by brothers Gary and Austin Taylor. There are no markers, but a note in the records that say both rows have one child buried in each. I was just wondering if you would have any information on a child of Gary being buried here.

I have not worked on the TAYLOR family in probably at least a year. It turns out that I never did research Gary's line very well, so will have to correct that now.

Robert Gary TAYLOR was b. May 1880 in South Carolina. He married twice:
Mattie (Maddie) MOORE 1883-1919 married about 1901

Frederick CUPP (1784-1867)

Frederick CUPP was born 17 Mar 1784 in Augusta County, Virginia. He died 14 Jan 1867 in Augusta ?County. I do not have proof of these dates and places, but they are on many family trees. He married Elizabeth BAKER 21 Aug 1810 in Rockingham County, Virginia. His father is said to be Marcus CUPP.

I am interested in Frederick because two of his children married the children of Christain RUSMISEL:
George B RUSMISEL married Catherine CUPP 29 Nov 1848
Mary Ann RUSMISEL married Simeon CUPP 19 Oct 1848.

There is a Frederick CUPP on the 1840 Census in Rockingham, but he is too young to be this Frederick. He may be a son or a nephew. This Frederick is probably there under one of the many variant spellings:
CUP, KOF, KOFF, KUP and others.

Two Rockingham County Polling Lists, 1842, Poll taken at Oterbine in Rockingham County on the Fourth Thursday in April [28] 1842 for two delegates to serve in the next General Assembly: Frederick Cupp

He is listed as a Lutheran living in Mt. Solon in the book "History of the Lutheran Church in Virginia and East Tennessee" published in 1930 by the Lutheran Synod, Shenandoah Publishing House, Inc., Strasburg, VA.

German Migration into Virginia

Today I found an interesting book on microfilm on Ancestry.com.

History of the Lutheran Church in Virginia and East Tennessee, Published by the Authority of the Lutheran Synod of Virginia, Cassell, C. W., Finck, W. J, and Henckel, Elon O., editors, 1930, Sheanandoah Publishing House, Inc., Strasburg, VA

I am abstracting a few notes from Chapter 1 "The People."

The first known German to enter the Colony of Virginia was Jacob Lederer. He was employed by Gov. William Berkely to explore. His maps and journals show that from 1699 to 1700 he travelled as far south as the Santee River in South Carolina and as far west as the Alleghany Mountains. It was 46 years later before Gov. Spottswood and his Knights of the Golden Horseshoe entered the Valley of the Virginia. The next year a ship of Luteran immigrants arrived and, unable to pay their passage, were endentured to the governaol as servants for the next eight years. After they served their term the emigrated (in 1725) to (what was in 1930) Madison County.

News of the German settlers in VA reached the fellow emigrants in Lancaster County, PA., and one of them named Adam Muller made a trip to investigate. He learned there was plenty of beautiful land and desire of the governor of VA to have it settled, so in 1726 or 1727 a large party of Germans migrated along the Indian trails to settled in the Shenandoah Valley on the South Fork of the Sheanndoah River. The settlers were mainly Mentonintes, but there were three Lutherans, including Adam Muller--later written Miller, who formed a Luterhan community near Elkton.

Following these early pioneers, Germans from PA, NJ, MD, and NY migrated and settled mostly in five communities in the valley. There follows various congregations and the names of many of the early members with some having more detailed genealogical information.

The French and Indian War, then later the Revolution, caused much uneasiness in the settlers. Some, who had moved as far south as NC, returned. Others moved from the northern part of the state to the southwest. One area near Harrisonbug received so many German emigrants that it was called German Valley. A fort was built there and named Fort Henkel, after Paul Henkel who settled there in 1784.

The next generation began intermarrying with the Scotch-Irish and thos names began to appear in the Lutheran rolls. What had before been an English speaking Scotch-Irish community became a largely German speaking German community.

There are many genealogical references in this book references to Lutheran marriages, migrations, and children.

Lawsuits concerning Christian RUSMISEL's Will

Christian RUSMISEL (son of Adam) died 7 Sep 1860 near Mt. Solon in Augusta County, VA. His will was proved 22 Oct 1860. Settlement of his estate did not take place until after the Civil War, so the estate suffered. His son, George, and son-in-law, Asher ARGENBRIGHT, were executors. The lawsuit was abstracted by Richard ARMSTRONG.

1864, Oct.: After the War Between The States, a suit was filed by Rachel M. Rusmisel Powers, alleging that she was compelled to accept Confederate notes for her portion of Christian's estate. This money, she said, was worth four cents on the dollar. The complaint by Rachel, states that in October 1864, as well as she can remember, Asher Argenbright came to the home of David Propst, her brother-in-law, where she was then staying. He brought to her a sum of money, in Confederate notes, which was her inheritance. She stated she refused to accept the money, and that Argenbright said he would compell her to accept the money, that she was legally bound to accept it. The complaint reads: "Deceived by these statements, she, being an uneducated female & ignorant of law & of all kinds of business, was finally persuaded, in the absence of her friend, to sign a paper acknowledging the receipt of the so called money.

A complaint [against George Rusmisel and Asher Argenbright as executors of Christain Rusmisel's will] , brought by John I. Rusmisel, and his sisters, Martha M., Marian E., Mary Cupp, Catharine Staubus, Rachel Powers, Rebecca Propst, and Pricilla Staubus, state: At the time of Christian Rusmisel's death, he owned a tract of land containing 170 3/4 acres, valued at at minimum of $35 per acre (worth $5,976.25). His personal property was offered for sale on February 7, 1861, and due to the uncertain times, the land was not sold. The land was held by the executors until February 1863, when it was sold to Jonas Lowman in aprivate sale. This was a violation of the will of Christian Rusmisel, who asked that it be sold at public auction. At the time of the sale, the executors received $3,000.00 in Confederate notes, with the balance to be paid in two installments; one on March 15, 1864 ($1,915.00) and the final one on March 15, 1865 ($1,915.00). At the time of the sale (February 1863), the Confederate notes were worth 20 to 25 cents on the dollar ($600 - $750). At the time the second payment was made, the notes were worth only about 4 cents on the dollar ($76.60). The third and final payment was never made. It was further stated: "That at the date of this sale your orator John I. Rusmisel was a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware, your orators Solomon Staubus and wife were living in the State of Indiana and your oratorex Martha M. Rusmisel was an infant, none of whom knew of the sale of the land, or have very received one cent of the purchase money from the

Executors. The rest of your orators, trusting the matter to the Exs. receipted to them for small sums of Confederate money as it was offered to them, not knowing or examining into their rights..." John and his siblings asked that the sale be set aside and the land be sold at public auction.

1871: Rebecca V. Propes, wife of David Propes, made a deposition, in which she states she has read the deposition of Rachel M. Powers regarding the $500 paid to her by Asher Argenbright..."I was present at the time of that transaction, which occurred at my own house -Rachael was then staying with me, and her memory is wholy at fault as to what really occurred - the true facts are these - Mr. Argenbright brought her five hundred dollars in confederate money. She made no objection whatever to receiving it - she receipted to him for the above amount, taking one Hundred thereof for her present individual use and advised with him as to what she ought to do with the remaining four hundred." Mr. Argenbright was going to Harrisonburg to invest some money in a Confederate bond. "She then requested him to take her four hundred & do likewise with hers. Mr. Argenbright on that occasion so far from using any threats to compel Rachael to receive the Five Hundred dollars, did not even try to pursuade her in fact there was no occasion for him to do so, because Rachael expressed no hesitation in giving him the receipt for the five hundred dollars, directing him to invest the four hundred above stated in a Confederate bond for her use in her own name. She said nothing whatever at the time about Confederate money not being good, and the whole transaction between both parties at the time was fair honest and voluntary. My husband and myself took our portion also in Confederate money, receipting just the same as Rachael did..."

1871: George Rusmisel, in a deposition, stated that Rachael asked them (the executors) to sell the cow she was bequeathed, and that she did not express any desire to retain any of the items bequeathed her, but would rather have the money for them. They were therefore sold, and the money given her.

Robert McLAUGHLIN

Robert McLAUGHLIN married two RUSMISEL girls. First he married Martha Melvinia RUSMISEL, daughter of Christian RUSMISEL, and they had (at least) 9 children. Then he married her niece, Mary Lydia Virginia RUSMISEL, daughter of George B. RUSMISEL, son of Christian. They had (at least) 5 children.

In Nov. 1888 Martha and George's sister Miriam had a lawsuit that named the children at that time of her sister Martha:
Children of Martha Rusmisel McLaughlin (deceased): Bessie E., Mariam M., William C., Martha A., Mary C., Bertha F., Robert L., George C., Bersa

I was able to find them all on the Censuses except Bersa. I am guessing that Miriam M is Mary M on the Censuses and and Nebraska E is probably Bessie E.

Robert and Martha married 2 Oct 1866 in Augusta County, Virginia.

File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Ann Anderson alabammygrammy@aol.com May 18, 2004, 12:52 pm Author: Brant & Fuller (1893)

WILLIAM SPORT, farmer and miller of Beat No. 8, was born in Marion district in 1822. He is a son of Jonathan and Margaret (Bailey) Sport, both of whom are natives of South Carolina and lived in Marion county till 1842, when they came to what is now Crenshaw county, Ala., settling in the woods near where William Sport now lives. Here they spent the rest of their lives, Mr. Sport dying in 1856 and Mrs. Sport in 1858. He was at the time of his death about eighty-one years old. Mr. Sport was a farmer all his life and a hard-working, honest, and respected man. Both he and his wife were for many years members of the Methodist Episcopal church. His father was William Sport, a Scotchman, who came to America, a young man during the Revolutionary war, and served in the Light Horse Guards. He afterward married in South Carolina and lived in the state the rest of his life. The maternal grandfather of William Sport Bailey probably died in South Carolina. William Sport was the eldest of a family of one son and three daughters, viz.: Mary Amanda; Sarah Anne, widow of Joseph Boykin, deceased; Thaney, deceased wife of Abel Boykin. William Sport was reared on the farm and remained with his parents till he was twenty-four years old. In 1847 he married Sarah Jane, daughter of Solomon and Elizabeth Singleton, natives of South Carolina, but who removed to Florida when Mrs. Sport was an infant. Here Mr. Singleton died, while Mrs. Sport was still a child, and then Mrs. Singleton came to Alabama and died in Clarke county during the war. Mrs. Sport was born in Marion district, S. C., and is the mother of twelve children, two of whom died in infancy. The names of the others are as follows: John Solomon; William G.; Thomas Benjamin; Malachi; Daniel W.; Joseph Nathaniel; Sarah Anne, wife of Andrew Hardidge; Amanda E., widow of Gabriel Wallace, deceased; Martha, deceased wife of William E. Strippling; Eliza, died a child. Mr. Sport has made three settlements in this neighborhood and has improved three farms. Since 1870 he has lived on his present place on Conecuh river, where he owns over 600 acres of good farming lands. In 1884 he erected a water power or grist mill which he has since operated. During a portion of the war he served in the state troops on the coast near Mobile. Mr. Sport was one of the earliest settlers in Crenshaw county, where he is well known and highly respected. He has always been hospitable, charitable, generous, and kind to the poor. Beside raising a large family himself he has reared and educated several orphans, having had under his care twenty-two children in all. He is a whole-souled and good-hearted man, and his wife possesses the same good qualities, and hence it would not be possible for them to be otherwise than highly respected by the entire community.

HABECKER

I often get off on tangents. Someone in the family I am researchers marries into the family or shows up on a census or document and I want to know who they are. In some areas there is so much intermarrying of families, that the research often pays off in finding out more about the family. Other times it doesn't seem to. the HABECKERS are probably examples of the latter, but you never know what distant cousin has a wonderful document, picture, or artifact.

Ida HABECKER  married Frank F RUSMISEL, son of Samuel D, son of David R, son of Christain, son of Adam, son of Georg. Ida's mother, Emma HABECKER, showed up living with the family on the 1930 Census. Ida listed her father as born in Germany. Emma lists her parents as born in Germany. I wanted to find out her father's name. (I usually try to find out the parents of spouses and proof of maiden names.)

The 1900 Census says that August emigrated in 1872 and has been in the US for 28 years, so he arrived when he was 14 years old.

On the 1880 Census August is living as a Boarder with the Warlitz family. The head of the household, Otto, is a Saloon Keeper, so this is probably where August works. The family is from Prussia, so they would also speak German. This time August lists his birthplace (and that of his parents) as Baden , which was at that time a Grand Duchy in the German Federation.

Adam RUSMISEL 4 generation descent tree

This is the descent tree I posted on the RUSMISEL mailing list on ROOTSWEB in 2002. I'm not sure if there are errors that need to be corrected, but thought I'd fish it out of the RUSMISEL-L Archives so current researchers will be more likely to find it and to add a RUSMISEL tree to this blog. Other listers and I have posted data there in the past.

David R RUSMISEL

Tonight I decided to research David R RUSMISEL (1808-1860), son of Christian, son of Adam. I had a bit of info on him from some reliable sources, but no primary documentation. I was thrilled to find some census records, including his death on the Mortality Schedules. The 1850 Census says he was a Tanner. The mortality schedules say he died in an accident. There is a one month old baby girl on the 1850 Census who has not been named yet. She was born in Illinois. The next child, Martha P., was born in Virginia two years before. All the other children were also born in Virginia.

Robert LOONEY's Manx origins

My husband Stephen's surname is LOONEY and I do his genealogy research. The family hails from the Isle of Man, a tiny island in the Irish Sea almost equal distance from Ireland, England and Scotland.

His imigrant ancestor, Robert Looney (c.1692-c 1770 VA), came to Pennsylvannia about 1731. Family history says he was from Man, but we were unable to prove this until DNA testing came along. Now we have a genetic map of Robert's y-DNA through testing of a number of his LOONEY male descendants. Another LOONEY surname tester's ancestors went from Man to Australia and also has a very close match, so we feel certain that they are from the same Manx family as the descendants of Robert. An early Robert Looney family history linked the family to Ballagilley farm in Maughold parish, but there is no proof that Robert came from there. There are many Looneys on Man, but they were prevalent in the 1700s in Maughold and in Lonan parishes. We went to the Isle of Man searching for my Manx ancestors and found Stephen's ancestors instead.
The names LOONEY and LEWNEY are two Manx variations of the same name derived from the original Gaelic according to "Surnames of the Manks" [sic] by Leslie Quilliam (1989).
The original name is thought to be Mac Giolla Dhomnaigh, meaning "Son of  the Lord's servant." [p.95] The Mac Guilley names once consisted of three parts: Mac = son, Guilley = boy or young man, often dedicated to be a servant or follower of a particular saint, and a saint's name. It is thought that there was a special connection with, or affection for a saint, as in the priesthood. [Early priests were not celibate. The movement towards celibacy did not begin until around 300 AD and marriage was not forbidden until the 1100s.] Guilley is the Manx spelling and Giolla the Gaelic. "Mac Guilley" later eroded  by disappearing in this case to just LOONEY.  [p. 19] "Mac" and "Mc" have been dropped from most Manx names.

A second possible original name is O'Luinigh, descendant of Luinigh, which means "armed."

The first written reference found was in 1498 "MacGillowny" and later "Lowney" 1640. Other spellings of the name came later. Lewney first is found in 1623 and Looney in 1644. Of course they could have been used earlier--that is just the first record found at the time of the book's printing in 1989. Around that time Lewney and Looney became separate families and both names now exist on Man. There are graves on Man and even in Maughold dating from the 1600s in both names. Spelling did not start to standardize anywhere until the 1700s.

LOONEY is pronounced colloquially [which is often the earlier version] on Man like Luna. This may explain why one branch decided to spell it that way when they moved to Tennessee. Modern pronunciation is Looni.

The name LOONEY is distributed on Man mainly in Maughold Parish. Lonan and Ramsey are the next most popular parishes for the name.

The Isle of Man was settled as early as 10,000 years ago probably by Iron Age Brythonic Celtic tribes from mainland Britain who built cairns, roundhouses, promontory and hill forts. The Irish are thought to have invaded near the end fof the Sixth Centruy. Scandinavian "Vikings" began plundering in the 800's and the Norwegians ruled the kingdom of "Man and the Western Isles" [of Scotland] until 1217.
Christianity was reputed to have been brought to Man by St. Maughhold (d. c 488 AD), who is considered the Patron Saint of Man. There are many versions of the tles, but supposedly he arrived by coracle (small boat), after being banished from Ireland by St. Patrick. Man has many lovely early Celtic Crosses such as the ancient Lonan Wheel-headeded cross.
After the Norwegians came, the crosses added the Scandinavian carvers' designs and mythological figures into their works.
Several years ago the LOONEY List on Rootsweb decided to use y-DNA testing to try to establish a map of the DNA of Robert Looney the Emigrant. Currently my husband (who is the 8th generation from Robert through his son Adam) has a exact 12-marker match with 9 other Robert Looney descendants. Using 37 markers, he has 6 matches.

Interesting to me also is that he is in Haplogroup I1. This group is mainly present in Scandinavian countries, where it can represent up to 50% of the population. This would fit in with the Norse invasion of Man and explain my husband's red hair.
